As the synchronous pattern ceases, insulin receptors undergo down regulation causing more Insulin Resistance (IR). IR leads to hyperinsulinemia (1).

One approach to counter IR would be to reintroduce precision physiologic insulin delivery. Instead of subcutaneous insulin delivery, it is achieved by intravenous access connected to a precision IV infusion pump. It mimics normal glucose metabolism by administration of small doses of regular fast acting insulin infused intermittently every 4-6 minutes over a 2-3 hour period. Infusions are given based on the degree of insulin resistance identified and customized individually to each patient (1).
